Sanitary landfill site of Régie Intermunicipale Argenteuil-Deux-Montagnes.

The site is located in Lachute, in Argenteuil MRC.

The site archives show that the first activities took place in 1966 and was bought by the city in 1971.

The landfill site was progressively transformed since 1995.  An ongoing project of technologically advanced methods for waste encapsulation in waterproof clay cells and leachate and biogas treatments are still improving the site.

The waters recuperated from the percolation on the site are treated in our basins, before they are sent back in the municipal network to finish the sanitary treatments, getting ready to be released in the environment.

During many years, biogas were burnt by a torch.  In the last few years, Lydia Énergie inc. has been using it to produce more than 10 MW of electricity.  Electricity production is easy to control in this context and very safe.  New methods allow a pre-treatment to purify the biogas, which get rid of most of contamination and keep only a mix of methane and carbon gas that is used in new energy applications.

A composting platform has also been laid out on the site in 1991.  This is a 7,4 hectares area including all the same commodities the site has.  For example, the composting platform receives christmas trees, gardens residus, cooking wastes, fall leaves, sceptic tanks wastes, etc.

Another platform is used for contaminated grounds treatments by bioventilation.  Once treated, these grounds can be used to cover the landfill site on a daily basis.
